Chandel organisations file petition to decommission Mapithel Dam

Chandel Naga bodies including Chandel Naga Peoples" Organisation (CNPO), Naga Women Union Chandel (NWUC) and Naga Students" Union Chandel (NSUC) urged the Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Jual to decommission Mapithel Dam and safeguard the rights of the Tribal indigenous peoples.
In a memorandum submitted to the Union Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Chandel, the organisations said that Mapithel dam which was approved by the planning commission in 1980 without the consent and knowledge of the people would affect over 8000 tribals spread across 22 villages and 1215 hactres of land in Senapati and Ukhrul Districts.
Naga bodies appealed to the Union Minister to take immediate steps to decommission the Mapithel dam.
"The project violates not only the tribal rights and affected their ancestral land but also violates the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 and the Forest Rights Act (FRA) of 2006" statement added.
