IBSD organises workshop on 'Exploring genomic resources of North East'

Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal, today organised a workshop on exploring genomic resources of the North Eastern Region for the development of bioeconomy from bioresources.
It was attended by Prof Pulok Kumar Mukherjee, Director IBSD; Prof N Lokendra Singh, Vice Chancellor, Manipur University; Dr Sagar Sengupta, Director, NIBMG; Dr Arindam Maitra, Associate Professor, NIBMG and Dr H Sunitibala Devi, Scientist, IBSD along with scientists/ scholars from IBSD, NIBMG & other institutions, said a release issued by IBSD Imphal.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Pulok Kumar Mukherjee highlighted various initiatives of the institute for the development of bioresources.
He mentioned that genome sequencing of bioresources is important for proper authentication and characterization of germplasms.
He also asserted that IBSD and NIBMG have joined hands for the genome sequencing and exploring genomic resources of the region.
Prof N Lokendra Singh appreciated the initiatives of IBSD for conducting such workshops in Imphal and added that economic transformation is only possible through multidisciplinary R&D activities in academics/ research institutes.
He also highlighted various initiatives of the Government of India for the implementation of quality research and emphasized on collaborative research between IBSD & Manipur University for the promotion of bioresources.
Dr Sagar Sengupta highlighted various activities of the institute where IBSD can collaborate for the development of genomic resources of this region.
He said that IBSD and NIBMG are working in collaboration for the human genome project and INSACOG.
Dr Arindam Maitra mentioned that genome sequencing of resources of NER is the need of the hour in the era of climate change/ global warming.
Dr H Sunitibala Devi highlighted various initiatives of IBSD for mass propagation and cultivation of Citrus sp.
for promotion of such bioresources in NER.
During the event, quality planting materials of Citrus sp.
were distributed to farmers and representatives from different relief camps.
