Imphal, March 01 2024:
Transgender activist Malem Thongam who has been staging a fast unto death protest with a demand to restore normalcy in Manipur has been taken to a hospital as her health deteriorated, today.
Malem, president of Lamyanba Irabot Memorial Integrated Trust (LIMIT), started her fast at New Delhi on February 22 and continued the same for five days at different places despite being detained a couple of times.
She returned to Imphal in February and resumed the fast unto death protest at the premises of YOC, a local club of Khurai Konsam Leikai.
Abrogate the Suspension of Operation (SoO) pact between the Government and Kuki militant groups and work out a solution to the ongoing crisis in Manipur are the demands which the trans activist has been raising.
Endorsing the demands being raised by Malem, several transgenders and womenfolk also staged a sit in protest at the same site i.e Khurai Konsam Leikai.
Reportedly, a team of Porompat police rushed to the protest by taking an ambulance along with them at around 1.30 pm as the health condition of Malem deteriorated.
The police, however, was prevented from taking the trans activist away by other transgenders and womenfolk who also protested at the area, resulting in a brief contest between the two sides.
Malem was taken to JNIMS after an additional team of police led by Imphal Additional SP arrived at the area.
