Total shut down called by major rebel groups in NE affects normalcy in Manipur

Imphal, October 15 2019: major rebel groups operating in the north Eastern states of India has severely affected normalcy in the state of Manipur putting life to a complete stand still.

The total shut down is called against the merger of Manipur along with other North East states including Tripura to the Indian Union on this day of 1949 .

Government offices in the state capital of Imphal and other district head quarters were seen opened for name shake.

Recorded attendance of major offices like the Secretariat, State Assembly and District administration are reported normal but the reality that no staffs were seen in their respective rooms and almost all employees restrained themselves from doing their duty.

No official visitors were present at any of the important office, but police station was opened without any intervention.

Traffic police on duty were seen relieved with no pressures as vehicular movement was near to nil.

Except some government vehicles and emergency and rituals related vehicles no commercial and private vehicles were seen in the street of major district head quarters in the state of Manipur.

Schools, colleges and other private establishment had been shut down.

The major three Khwairambhand Ima Keithel here in the heart of the Imphal city bore deserted looks.

Shops and business establishment in both Paona and Thangal Keithel remained shuts during the total shut down called by the rebel groups.

It may be mentioned Coordination Committee (CorCom), National Liberation Front of Twipra (NLFT) and the Alliance for Socialist Unity, Kangleipak (ASUK) called the total shut down today in protest against 'forced merger' of Tripura and Manipur into the Indian Union.

While NLFT and ASUK have called in for a 12-hour bandh from 5 am to 5 pm, CorCom has called for statewide bandh for 18 hours, starting from Monday midnight till Tuesday.

NLFT president H Uastwng Borok and ASUK chairman N Oken have stated about the proposed shutdown through a statement released to the media.

The Coordination Committee, a conglomerate of PREPAK, UNLF, PREPAK (PRO) and the RPF in its statement, had stated that October 15 as 'National Black Day' since the past years in order to protest against the Manipur Merger Agreement signed between Maharaja Bodhachandra of Manipur and the Government of India in Shillong.

The agreement dates back to October 15, 1949 .

During the total shut down religious, medical, media and emergency services were refrained during total shut down.

NLFT and ASUK have termed the day as dark period in the history of Tripura and Manipur.
