Imphal, October 15 2019:
Coordinating Body, Khurai had lauded the State Government's decision to legalise marijuana cultivation in the State, terming it a positive step.
A statement issued by the spokesperson of the body today claimed that such a move will divert attention and the people away from the effect of heroin, explaining that in the past, when cultivation of marijuana was legal in the State, Manipur did not have much impact from heroin or opium.
It further reasoned that in the past, when the drive against liquor was going on extensively, people did not vent out their addiction on marijuana which shows that the said item is not regarded as a drug in the State and clarified that this does not mean marijuana is not a drug but simply that it is far safer when compared to other drugs like heroin or opium.
It then appealed to the State Government to properly enact a policy or law to legalise marijuana farming at the earliest in such a way that people can generate revenue and at the same time implementation steps to prevent widespread misuse of the same plant simultaneously.
