HIV/AIDS awareness programme held

The District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit, Ukhrul today organized a one day awareness programme on HIV/AIDS at Town Hall, Phungreitang, reports Mungchan Zimik.
Ningshem Vashum , SP, Ukhrul, appreciated the Medical Department for consistently working to reduce, prevent and control the rate of HIV/AIDS infection in the district.
Holistic approach is a priority to combat the disease which is endangering the whole society, said the SP .
In his keynote address, Dr Kapangring, DACO, Ukhrul elaborated on medical facilities which are available free of cost for HIV/AIDS infected persons at the district hospital.
Resource person Dr Felix spoke on the historical background of HIV/AIDS infection in Manipur.
He said that HIV/AIDS was first detected in 6 individuals in 1989 and added that the figure has since risen.
Dr Pamza, Ukhrul district hospital, highlighted the harm reduction policies taken up under the phase IV HIV/AIDS awareness programme.
According to the hospital record, there are 1533 HIV/AIDS positive cases while 1025 patients were administered Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) .
District NGOs working on HIV/AIDS, Church leaders and school students attended the awareness programme.
