Imphal, February 08 2017:
Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur (ICHAM) has demanded the State Government and other authorities concerned to provide quick settlement for the people of Chadong and other neighbouring villages who were rendered homeless due to the construction of Mapithel dam which is a part of Thoubal Multipurpose project.
Speaking to media persons, who along with the members of ICHAM went to meet the villagers, N Rajendro (president, ICHAM) said, "The villagers of Chandong have been rendered homeless and need to be resettled as they have every right to lead normal and peaceful lives".

He said, "The State Government has failed to notice the plight of the villagers in the light of the coming election.
If IFCD and the Chief Engineer had sanctioned the resettlement fund, then there is no need for any delay" .
He expressed suspicion that the resettlement work seem to have been put on hold due to the non existence of profit for those involved.
Strongly condemning the Government's failure to provide any form of compensation for the people being affected by the project, Rajendro said, "The State Government and the authorities concerned need to see the plight of the villagers.
ICHAM will not stay a mere spectator to this grave injustice and will try to help the villagers by collaborating with other CSOs".
If the State Government and the departments concerned do not provide the necessary facilities and amenities for the villagers, then ICHAM will expose the wrongdoings of the Government and the IFCD to the people, he threatened.
Rockson Kashong, secretary of JAC on Rehabilitation and Resettlement of Chadong Village, said, "It is really disappointing that despite numerous promises, the Government has failed to take up any steps to ease the suffering of the villagers who have resorted to constructing their settlement through the help of donations.
"Do not politicise the construction of the dam.
The Government should do its job and not forget that the people of Chadong are constructing their own settlement without the Government's help despite the hardship", he added.
