Imphal, December 07 2011:
Mere launching of a 24-hour Helpline service would not serve the purpose of effectively attending to various complaints on crimes against women as Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) is currently plagued with acute shortage of manpower, said MSCW Chairperson Dr L Ibetombi.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, the Chairperson said, "The Commission is not able to effectively help the victims of crimes against women as it is being run by only three members including the Chairperson since its inception in 2005" .
Without adequate manpower, the Helpline service would not serve any purpose, she added.
The Chairperson said that the Commission needs staff and complaint centres at all the district headquarters as well to immediately rush to the spots for extending support to the victims and their families.
Regarding incidents occurring in rural areas, Dr Ibetombi said that there is need for information sharing and co-ordination between Pradhans/Ward Members and the Commission.
Mentioning the role of local clubs in curbing violence against women, the Chairperson said that these local bodies may not only organise awareness programmes but also inform any matter to the Commission.
Vigilant local clubs and women organisations would prove to be immensely helpful to the Commission in solving family problems and booking the anyone perpetrating crimes against women, she added.
Giving a brief statistics on various complaints lodged at MSCW from 2007 to 2011, Dr Ibetombi informed that the Commission received 230 complaints during this time comprising of 52 maintenance, 45 harassment, 11 widow property, three rape, two attempt to rape, 25 desertion, six murder, 42 matrimonial dispute, 18 bigamy, 14 compensatory and 15 miscellaneous cases.
