Cheating rampant, asserts DESAM

Imphal, March 06 2016: Expressing serious concern over the alleged rampant practices of using unfair means in the ongoing HSSLC and HSLC exams, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has censured Edu-cation Minister for the eroding education system in the State.

In a statement, publicity and propaganda secretary of DESAM, Leishangthem Lamyanba Meitei said that it is very unfortunate that mass copying, cheating, supplying of notes and solved questions to students and other unfair practices became rampant this year after the State witnessed clean exams since 2001-02 .

DESAM wondered whe-ther these unfair practices in exams are the Education Minister's promise of bringing 'change' in the State's education system.

The Education Minister should be held solely responsible for the rampant use of unfair means in the exams, DESAM statement said.

Although BOSEM, COHSEM and State Education Dept had shown earnest efforts towards clean exams for the last few years, the efforts fail to pay dividends and the system became more rotten due to apparent insincerity on their parts, DESAM said.

Although the State Govt installed CCTV cameras at 18 exam centres in order to ensure clean exams, inspection teams of various students' bodies have found many students using unfair means at these centres.

The installation of CCTV camera is not serving its intended purposes.

It now becomes only a wastage of public money, it said.

DESAM also said that the appointment of micro-observers at various exam centres turns out ineffective.

How far the Education Minister is sincere in taking up steps to ensure clean exams is evident from Heirok centre.

If the Minister was sincere enough to ensure 'change' in the exam system in the whole State, he would at least ensure clean exam at his locality.

On the contrary, Heirok centre has unfortunately become the most unclean exam centre in Manipur, DESAM pointed out.

It further urged all OCs and invigilators to execute their duties sincerely and not to get themselves involved in supplying notes, helping the students or encouraging or abetting the students to resort to unfair practices.

It also urged parents concerned not to resort to bribe or win the favour of teachers in order to get their help during exams while also urging parents to immediately stop helping their children during exams by supplying notes from outside exam centres.

DESAM further urged the students to shun the mentality of passing exams with the use of unfair practices.

The Govt should impose restriction under CrPC 144 within 100 metre radius of exam centres if it is serious to clean the system with effect from tomorrow, it said.
