Delhi, July 05 2011:
A self-styled commander of a banned Manipuri outfit and his associate were arrested for their alleged involvement in connection with the recovery of 200 kg of ephedrine worth Rs two crore in April, police said today.
Sunil Meitei (35), the self-styled commander of Kangleipak Communist Party (MTF-Sunil Meitie Group), was apprehended from Bangalore while his associate Robindro (43) was arrested from Manipur last week, Arun Kampani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), said.
With this, a total of four persons have been arrested in connection with the case.
Police smashed the racket when they arrested one Nepoleon Thockchom from Samalakha village in south-west Delhi on April one while he was going to the Delhi airport.
200 kg of ephedrine, a key precursor for manufacturing amphetamine stimulants such as the ecstasy drug, was recovered from Thockchom.
On May 5, one Nongthongbam Anand, the Commander-in-Chief & Publicity Secretary of banned militant organization KCP (MC), was apprehended from Bangalore in connection with the case.
It was during their interrogation that the role of Meitei came out.
Police had in early March received an input that large quantities of ephedrine is being illegally supplied from Delhi to Mayanmar and China via Manipur.
"The proceeds of these illegal sales were being sent to various banned militant organizations of Manipur for conducting their nefarious activities," Kampani said.
Meitei joined the extremist organization due to the influence of his elder brother Ranjit who was the publicity secretary of Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), a banned outfit, since 1993 .
Meitei also started to work for KYKL and was arrested by Manipur police in 2003 and later got bail.
In 2006, he started working for KYKL as an overground worker.
Meitei was again arrested under NSA in October 2007 by Bishnupur police.
While he was in jail, he came in touch with City Meitei, the founder of MTF (Mobile Task Force) group of banned terrorist outfit KCP.
"Initially, Meitei was given the task of recruiting new cadres and raise fund from Town Commissioners, Panchayats and social welfare departments of Manipur, owners of petrol pumps and cinemas hall.
He has collected a sum of about Rs 50 lakh during that period while he was working with Kesho Meitei," Kampani said.
"Meitei used to send demand letters and collecting percentage in government tenders from various government departments, sitting MLAs etc.
He also used to invest the extorted money in the illicit trade of drugs through Rabindro and raised huge funds from that illegal drug trade with the help of above mentioned Yaiphaba and Rabindro," he said.
Meitei got training in the training camp of KYKL in Bangladesh.
During his training, he got expertise in handing of various arms and ammunition like AK rifles, 9 mm Pistols and hand grenades.
Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) has been invoked against the two arrested persons and further investigation is in progress.
