Imphal, July 03 2016:
People of one Nungei village who fled their homesteads and are currently taking refuge at Lilong Chajing and Iram Siphai have categorically stated that they would not return to their Nungei village until the Gov-ernment put in place adequate security measures.
Speaking to media persons today at Lilong Chajing community hall where a large number of people are taking shelter, Nungei JAC convenor Khaidem Sanjay said that Meiteis are minority in Nungei area even though Meiteis are said to be majority community in Manipur.
As such, Meiteis of Nun-gei have been enduring harassments allegedly meted out to them by the dominant majority community.
The matter went out of control as the Government failed to resolve the issue of firing at Nungei Meira Paibis by some miscreants belonging to the neighbouring com- munity even though the incident took place almost three months back.
There are 72 Meitei households with a total population of 430 at Nungei.
As they felt highly insecure in their village, Nungei Meitei villagers started fleeing away from their homesteads since July 1 .
Sanjay then expressed keen desire for the Government, civil society organisa- tions and leaders of different communities to work collectively so as to bring peace and normalcy in Nungei area.
He also appealed to the dominant community of Nungei to stop harassing and threatening the minority community.
For the displaced people of Nungei, a temporary relief camp has been opened at Lilong Nagar Panchayat community hall at the initiative of the All Lilong Chajing Clubs Organisation and the All Lilong Chajing Apunba Meira Paibi Lup.
Meanwhile, District Helath Society, Thoubal has organised a free medical camp for the displaced villagers at the community hall.
The medical camp was conducted under the supervision of Thoubal CMO Dr N Jayantakumar and Thoubal District Health Society DPM H Rishikesh Sharma.
Apart from providing free medicines, chemical-treated mosquito nets were also distributed.
Social network group Mateng Panglusi Eikhoi also extended monetary assistance to the villagers.
