Woman killed in poll related violence

An elderly woman succumbed to bullet injuries and a minor girl injured when unknown persons fired at a polling camp of the Congress party at Namkaolong village under Nungba Assembly Constituency in Tamenglong district even as a Congress worker was shot at in a Senapati district area and bomb attacks persisted in different locations of the valley pockets.
According to police report, a group of heavily armed persons fired atleast 40 rounds at a polling camp of the INC in Namkaolong Part-I at around 7.30 pm yesterday.
The attack claimed the life of 80-year old local woman identified as Makuchunlei Panmei.
She breathed her last on the way to hospital while a 13-year old girl identified as Kanpurei Kabui from Khoupum Khunou has been admitted to RIMS Hospital with a bullet injury on the right heel.
Police source quoted Namkaolong locals as saying that some armed persons threatened the locals against voting for the Congress nominee.
INC candidate in Nungba AC Gaikhangam, who is also the Manipur pradesh Congress Committee president, strongly condemned the attack and told newspersons at RIMS Hospital that such acts of violence would be futile.
About an hour earlier, unknown gunmen wounded a supporter of Education Minister and Congress candidate DD Thaisii at Angkailongdi village, which is close to Senapati district headquarters.
The injured person has been identified as Ng Dany Poumai (35), who hails from Koide village but presently resides at Senapati Viewland.
Dany, who is said to be a functionary (secretary) of Poumai Students' union, suffered two bullet wounds on the left thigh.
In the valley areas, bomb and gun attacks continued with the latest incident taking place at Thangmeiband Hijam Leikai at around 11 am today in which a suspected bomb planter sustained injuries in accidental blast.
The explosion occurred at near a temporary toilet close to the residence of Director (Retd) Dr L Chandramani Singh.
The injured person has been identified as Shijagurumayum Momocha Sharma (32) of Brahmapur Aribam Leikai.
Police recovered a handset like gadget with antenna from near the injured Momocha, which is suspected to be a remote control device.
Locals claimed to have seen Momocha coming in a rickshaw and allegedly trying to place the explosive device near the toilet when the blast took off.
