DESAM apprises Education Minister

Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has submitted a 22-point charter of demands to the State's Education Minister today.
Addressing a press meet at its head office today, DESAM President Wangmayum Islauddin said the present education system of the State requires some drastic changes in both the organisational structure as well as the departmental administration.
He said the students' body would extend cooperation to the Department if it is committed in achieving the stated goals of improving the situation, but it would not remain a silent spectator in case any corrupt elements interfere in the functioning of the department.
Urging the Education Minister to work with greater commitment so as to become an agent of change, the DESAM president said the students' body would extend possible cooperation towards this end.

Among others, the charter of demands submitted by DESAM included institution of the Manipur Education Commission and Manipur Education Services, review of units/offices of education department vis-a-vis District Council Amendment Rules, 2008, re-organisation of schools and rationalisation process, in-charge and OSD appointment against non sanctioned post, setting up of State Advisory Board on Education comprising MLAs, inspection visits to schools.
It also demanded upgradation/re-designation of posts, amendment of recognition rules, making special English medium schools fully residential one, regularisation of promotion, amendment of recruitment rules, transfer/rationalisation policy, convergence of related central sponsored schemes, control over private schools, orientation training of teachers at regular intervals, review of aided schools rules, induction of Metei Mayek in schools, preparation of detailed data base in respect of the employees of the department and streamlining of SCERT and setting up of Text Book Board.
At the same time, urging the concerned department to materialise the demands, vice-president of DESAM, M Angamba said that development would be a distant dream if the education system is not rectified.
The students' body has also submitted a copy of the memorandum to the Principal Secretary of the Education Dept.
