Imphal, August 21 2023:
Urging all concerned not to remember Manipuri language only on the occasion of Manipuri Language Day but to contribute their mite in developing and enriching the language, Manipur University of Culture (MUC) Umanglai Haraoba Department assistant professor Dr Thounaojam Ruhichand has stressed the need for the state government to frame a separate Manipuri Language policy.
Speaking on the occasion of the 32nd Manipuri Language Day celebration held at MUC extension office at Canchipur on Sunday, Dr Ruhichand expressed that inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution is a moment which will be forever cherished by all Manipuris.
Though the language meets all the criteria for upgrade to classical language, there is every reason to be apprehensive over fate of the same as it both blessed and unpredictable, especially as Manipuri language has negligible usage at the higher education level, he said.
However, with the national education policy emphasising on promotion of regional languages, Manipuri language has the potential to meet objective of the policy and occupy a larger platform in the higher education level, said Dr Ruhichand.
The celebration was also attended by Umanglai Haraoba Department head Dr Oinam Binarani, guest faculty Mutum Maniton, English Department assistant professor Irom Robindro and students and teachers of the varsity.
