Bombs galore, six women hurt in grenade attack

Imphal, January 27, 2012:
At least six women sustained injuries when unidentified persons lobbed a hand grenade at a market shed at Waheng Khuman under Nambol AC at about 10 last night.
Corcom has claimed responsibility for the bomb attack.
The injured victims have been identified as Ngangom Leirikmacha (50), Ngangom Ibecha (38), Yanglem Tharongoubi (60), Ngangom Gomti (32), Kshetrimayum Tababi (40) and her daughter Priyakhombi.
All of them belong to Waheng Khuman and they are undergoing treatment at RIMS.
Taking strong exception to the attack, a protest demonstration was staged today at the same market shed.
The protesters put up placards which read as "What is the fault of mothers?", "Bomb attack on mothers cannot be justified", "Don't try to disrupt the sacred bond between mothers and sons" etc.
They maintained that they have been putting up nights there since a month back to check abuse of intoxicants and quarrels in the run up to the elections.
"We were not braving the cold nights in connection with the elections or in support of any particular candidate", they said.
CorCom has however said that the attack was carried out as part of its boycott of the Congress party.
On the other hand, a powerful explosion rocked Moirangkhom at about 8 am yesterday when the Republic Day celebration was underway.
The bomb which exploded on Imphal river bank near Shyamasakhi High School did not cause any human casualty.
Claiming responsibility for the incident, CorCom said that it was done as part of its boycott call of Republic Day celebration.
One IED weighing around three Kgs was recovered by police from Haokip Veng, Mahaballi at about 9.15 pm of January 25. A hand grenade at the was lobbed at the residence of Congress worker Khamba (45) at Keirao Makting at around midnight of January 25. But the grenade failed to go off.
Another Congress worker, Md Aslam Raj of Sangaiyumpham Cherapur Mayai Leikai was assaulted by some unidentified persons at about 11 pm of January 26.Moreover, few round of shots were also fired in the air.
Md Aslam is undergoing treatment at Thoubal district hospital.
A hand grenade which was lobbed by unidentified persons at the residence of Congress supporter Khundrakpam Ibotombi at Khangabok Part II Mayai Leikai at about 7.30 pm yesterday failed to go off.
The grenade was later retrieved by police.
Further, an IED weighing around 500 gms was found at the roof-top of another Congress worker Moirangthem Borajao (66) at Khangabok Moirang Palli at about 11.20 am of January 26. The IED has been retrieved by explosive experts of Manipur Police.
Two hand grenades were also found at the residence of Congress worker Irom Chaoba at Leishangthem Khong Manung early morning yesterday.
Another hand grenade exploded at Chaoba's residence in the night of January 25 but there was no casualty.
A hand grenade hurled by some unidentified persons exploded at the residence of Congress candidate in Andro AC Al Haj Ahmad Ali at Yairipok Ningthounai at about 11 pm yesterday but there were no reports of any casualty.
Meanwhile, unidentified persons fired several rounds of shots at the residence of Wangkhem BCC president Md Mubarak Ali (60) at Yairipok Bamon Leikai at around 3.30 am of January 26. Almost at the same time, Yairipok Nagar Panchayat Chairperson Thangjam Nokul (45) was attacked by opening fire at his Yairipok Kekru Mayai Leikai residence.
Several rounds of shots were also fired at the residence of Trinamool Congress worker, Lourembam Sanjoy (33) at Yairipok Yambem at about 3 am of January 26.Police retrieved a hand grenade which was discovered at the residence of Congress worker Phurailatpam Guneshwar (52) of Bhramapur Laishram Leikai at about 9.20 pm yesterday.
Meanwhile, a hand grenade hurled by some unidentified persons exploded at the residence of Khuraijam Somorendro (48) at Tera Sapam Leirak at about 4.30 this morning.
Another hand grenade which failed to go off was also recovered from the same residence.
One more hand grenade exploded at the residential compound of one Khangenbam Bishojit (42) of Athokpam Mayai Leikai at about 5 pm today.
However, there was no casualty.
