Imphal, October 17 2018:
BJP State Unit has lauded Chief Minister N Biren Singh for bringing an agreement between the State Government and the Manipur University community and the student organisations leading to the release of the arrested teachers and students of the university as well as the return of normalcy in the university at long last.
Speaking to media persons at BJP State Unit office at Canchipur today, BJP spokesperson Chongtham Bijoy said that the party is proud of CM Biren's tireless work towards bringing an end to the protracted university issue.
He continued that BJP State unit also lauds MHRD Minister Prakash Javadekar for assuring to send a Central Chief to collect all the audit report of the University from 2005 onwards and added that such a step will be seen as positive to the world.
Claiming that some people with vested interests are still trying to tarnish the image of the State Government and the party in connection with the university issue, Bijoy said that those who question why the FIRs lodged against Prof K Yugindro were not accepted by the authority concerned, have no knowledge regarding the law.
On the other hand, he condemned the insulting act of handcuffing the Professors while they were being brought to a hospital and added that the incident will be a dark moment in the history of Manipur.
The spokesperson said that the jail manual in the State and for the country has some difference with the modern law and added that in 1975, the Supreme Court ordered that no under-trial prisoners should be handcuffed if he or she does not make any attempt to evade or run.
Clarifying about the charges levelled against Chief Minister N Biren Singh in social media sites as being dictatorial during the MU crisis, the BJP spokesperson said that necessary legal actions were taken up in some situations due to fear of harm to social harmony due to such social media posts.
Even if there is freedom of speech, there is a boundary.
One cannot cross those boundaries and speak about things which can harm the dignity of another or harm the social harmony, Bijoy explained and claimed that this does not mean the Government is trying to suppress freedom of speech.
The Government fully respects human rights, he added.
Pointing out that police and security forces have to be used sometimes to maintain law and order during demonstrations/bandhs and strikes, Bijoy stated that one cannot 'democratically' kick the gates of the Governor or the CM's residence and at such times, police have to resort to lathi charge, tear gas and rubber bullets for riot control.
On the other hand, Bijoy asked the Congress party on what basis it claimed that it had won and BJP had lost in the face of the High Court of Manipur ruling on the Manipur University crisis.
