Imphal, March 17 2016:
DGP LM Khaute has asserted that the Police Department has been working with full attention in order to keep the law and order situation under control.
Speaking to some media persons today, LM Khaute stated that police have taken up all possible measures to improve the law and order situation apart from top-ranking police officers holding meetings on daily basis.
On being enquired about incidence of bomb blasts and intimidations, the DGP said that police have been keeping sharp vigil at strategic areas and other places vulnerable to violent attacks.
Some police personnel have been working covertly so as to thwart subversive activities.
As a result of their sustained efforts, police have been able to pull up some individuals in connection with some cases of bomb blasts and planting explosives, claimed the DGP.
Police have been regularly pulling up people who are involved in extorting money from different departments.
Today too, a couple from Kodompokpi was arrested along with 35 letterheads of KCP (Mangal) .
On being enquired about the traffic problems of Imphal city, the DGP maintained that police alone would not be enough to bring a smooth traffic system in the city.
To bring an smooth traffic system, there must be effective coordination among different departments.
There must be coordination among Transport, Town Planning, PWD and Police Departments and the role of police is restricted to enforcing traffic rules.
At the same, the existing traffic system cannot be replaced by a new one within a couple of days.
Admitting that the present condition of Traffic Police is far from satisfactory, Khaute said that a proposal has been sent to the authority concerned to appoint SPs, Additional SPs and DSPs under one DIG for Traffic Police.
If the proposal is approved by the Government, it would go a long way in addressing many of the traffic problems, he said.
To another query about immoral activities carried out inside restaurants which invited punitive actions from UG outfits, the DGP maintained that police should always maintain cordial relationship with the public and they cannot do anything which is not acceptable to the people.
This does not mean police have been sitting idle regarding seedy restaurants and hotels.
Opening a hotel or restaurant should be done with due permission from the municipal council or the local body concerned, the DGP said and claimed that due procedures have been initiated to check all hotels and restaurants whether they have obtained permission from the authority concerned and whether they are in line with social ethics.
The DGP then appealed to all the citizens to extend cooperation to police for the security and well being of the society.
