To conserve and save the remaining water bodies in Lamphelpat area, considered to be the lungs of Imphal city, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh personally inspected the area along with other Government officials today.
With Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh himself conducting a spot inspection, necessary steps towards protection and conservation of the remaining water bodies in Lamphelpat area is expected to be initiated very soon, an official source said, while pointing out that the conservation of water bodies in Lamphelpat area has already been discussed by the Government in consonance with State Action Plan on combating the challenges of climate change in Manipur.
During the course of the inspection today, the Chief Minister also issued necessary instructions to the accompanying officials concerned for earmarking the areas covered by the remaining water bodies that need to be protected and conserved as well as for evicting unauthorised structures and encroachers.
Along with the officials, the Chief Minister also discussed ways and means of draining out the excess water from Lamphelpat to solve the problem of recurring flood in the surrounding areas, the source disclosed.
Unabated human encroachment and the dumping of waste material has polluted large swathes of the water bodies at Lamphel areas, during the last many years.
The low lying areas of Lamphel are also prone to floods and the clogging of the natural drainage system has only compounded the matter.
Prior to the inspection tour of Lamphelpat, the Chief Minister also visited the Lamphel Super Market complex, where street vendors have been allotted plots by the Government as well as JNIMS to take stock of the progress of the developmental works being taken up there.
