Dengue-like cases detected in Churachandpur

Imphal, October 18 2012:
After two persons of a family living in Don Bosco colony of Churachandpur have been found suffering from a dengue-like infection, blood samples have been collected and sent to RIMS laboratory for confirmation.
According to information received from the State Malaria Officer, Natoinal Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, a 76 year old woman and her 38 year old daughter-in-law have been suffering from fever for about the last 10 .
As the symptoms looked suspicious, blood samples were tested in two medical laboratories of Churachandpur.
However, the two laboratories gave contradictory results with one saying that it was found negative while the other said it was positive.
Notably, RIMS laboratory is the only laboratory recognised by the Government for testing dengue infection.
Perplexed by the two contradictory laboratory results, the Churachandpur District Malaria Officer sent blood samples to the State Malaria Officer for confirmation last Monday, conveyed the official.
The blood samples have been sent to RIMS and results are expected very soon.

Further, an official team led by the State Malaria Officer visited the two sick women and examined their symptoms.
The official team observed that the home of the particular family was not hygienic enough.
There were many puddles with stagnant water around the house where dengue-carrier mosquitoes might have bred.
Close to the house, there was a hen coop though it was empty when the officials visited the family.
There was a plastic bottle for providing water to chickens earlier.
With no more chickens to drink water from the plastic bottle, the bottle was filled with stale water.
The team observed that water inside the bottle was teeming with dengue-carrier mosquitoes, informed the source.
Notably, there was extensive outbreak of fever in Churachandpur district, Out of blood samples collected from 747 patients and tested in RIMS, 216 were found positive for dengue infection.
There were reports that even as 216 patients were found positive, less than 10 patients were hospitalised.
But no official report could be obtained.
