Assam Rifles seizes contraband worth Rs 13 crore

Imphal, May 02 2021:
Shangshak Battalion under the aegis of IGAR (South) foiled smuggling of timber near Bungdung village in Kamjong today.
Based on credible inputs from the reliable sources, troops of Assam Rifles intercepted eight vehicles carrying timber alongwith smuggled timber assessed to be worth Rs 10.56 crore, said a statement issued by PRO Assam Rifles.
The eight drivers were apprehended and they along with the timber were handed over to Kasom Khullen Police Station for further legal action.
In another instance, troops of Tengnoupal Battalion and 165 TA Battalion under the aegis of IGAR (South) foiled smuggling of contraband along NH-102 today.
Based on specific intelligence regarding likely of smuggling contraband near Lockchao, the troops launched an operation and while carrying out a thorough search of the area they recovered contraband items worth Rs 2.77 crore, added the statement.
The major items being smuggled were foreign cigarettes, beer and anti-mosquito coil.
The contraband was handed over to civil authorities for further action.
