Imphal, August 03 2018:
A substantial quantity of dry prawns painted red were seized from shops dealing in dry fishes and Ngari during a drive carried out by Food Safety officials at Nambol Bazar today.
Certain powder used in painting the prawns red was also seized.
The drive was carried out after a video clip in which water used for washing dry prawns bought from a place at Imphal turned red was uploaded on social media.
Taking serious note of the video clip, a team of Bishnupur Food Safety Officers led by Y Surendro and Dr M Dinesh carried out drives at Moirang Keithel, Bishnupur Keithel and Nambol Keithel today.
At some shops of Nambol Keithel, they saw red prawns which appeared to be coloured artificially.
They took some of these prawns and soaked them in water.
A little later, the water was seen turning red.
Immediately, the Food Safety Officers seized the artificially reddened prawns.
They have also prepared a sample for necessary test at the State Public Health Laboratory, Lamphelpat, informed a source.
