Media sensitization prog on Measles-Rubella vaccination held

Bishnupur District Family Welfare Officer Dr P Merajao held a media sensitization programme on Measles-Rubella vaccination at the office of the former today.
Media being the fourth pillar of democracy and considering the vast roles it plays and impact it can produce, the media sensitization was organised, said Dr P Merajao during the programme.
Sensitising the media about Measles � Rubella vaccination campaign will help spread awareness among the people, he said.
Measles is one of the most contagious diseases ever known and is an important cause of death and disability among young children worldwide.
Rubella can cause severe birth defects.
Symptoms of Measles includes cough, fever, red eyes, light sensitivity, muscle aches, runny nose, sore throat, , white spots inside the mouth and widespread skin rash.
Speaking about the vaccination campaign, he said that the MR vaccines are administered to children aged between 9 and 15 years.
About 70,000 children in the district will be covered by the vaccination campaign.
Health workers, Anganwadi workers/ helpers and ASHA workers will work together in the campaign, he said.
The first phase of the campaign will cover the school going children which made up of 70% of the total children population in the district.
The second phase of the vaccination campaign will focus on the non school children at the Anganwadi centres and health centres in the district, said the family welfare officer.
India is aiming to eradicate measles by 2020 and Rubella by 2022, he added.
Meanwhile, an awareness programme on the MR vaccination was held at Kwakta Primary Health Centre today.
The awareness programme organised by District Administration Bishnupur and District Health Society Bishnupur was attended by DC Bishnupur district Pawan Yadav, CMO Dr H Babychand Devi, District Welfare Officer P Merajao Singh, District Consultant of UNICEF Dr Riyajuddin and District Co-ordinator of WHO Puspen Gosh as dignitaries.
DC Pawan Yadav appealed CSOs, clubs and all the stakeholders to co-operate in the upcoming 5 weeks long MR vaccination campaign from March 26 in the district.
Religious leaders, teachers of various educational institutes, representatives of NGOs, members of Lions Club of Moirang and local leaders attended the event.
