Nupuiya Lhawa Chun festival celebrated

Welcoming the new year, Maring women today celebrated Nupuiya Lhawa Chun festival at different Maring villages.
The festival was celebrated at Phunal Sambum village, Chandel district today where numerous Maring women sang their cultural songs and danced together to mark the celebration.
Speaking to media persons, chief of Phunal Sambum village, M Kodun Maring said that the festival marks the beginning of a new year and the womenfolk celebrates the festival with songs and dance.
He said that the Maring people used to celebrate the festival one day after Meitei Cheiraoba, however, following the decision of a Maring apex body, Maring Uparup Assembly, the festival was set to observe on the first Saturday of April.
In earlier days, during the festival, men used to go hunting and present the animal they caught as gifts to the women, but as time changes and hunting is prohibited, that particular tradition is no longer practised, he added.
