Imphal, November 24 2013:
While appreciating MEELAL for doing all the necessary research for preserving the dying script of Meetei, All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) has reiterated its stance against imposition of Meitei Mayek script on the tribals in the State.
In a statement, ATSUM said that it will not accept imposition of the script on the tribals by amending the Manipuri Official Language Act, 1979 and publishing school text books in Meetei Mayek script.
''The DGP may have a good reason for his promise to inscribe Meitei Mayek in all the police department signboards but he must be aware that the 35 percent plus tribal population are deadly against this policy.
ATSUM will see that no vehicles or signboards with Meetei Mayek script are allowed in the hills region,'' the statement said.
