Thoubal, January 02 2020:
The proposed District Survey Report (DSR) of the Government regarding river sand mining is laudable but it lacks several key areas that need to be covered, said Thoubal River Conservation Committee today.
In a statement issued by its convenor, the committee claimed that while the proposed survey aims to find favourable and safe areas for mining activities, it fails to include a survey of impact illegal mining had on the river ecosystem to ban the activities.
The committee also claimed that finding of favourable mining areas is the duty of Commerce and Industries Department while the Water Resources Department and District Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (DEIAA) should study the environmental impact mining would have in the area identified by the Commerce and Industries Department.
It then cautioned that the committee will file a petition to the High Court regarding the matter.
