Speaking on the occasion, Yambem Biren said that Maharaja Bodhchandra as sovereign authority enacted the Manipur State Constitution Act 1947 on January 1, 1947.All rights, authority and jurisdiction of Maharaja Bodhchandra were transferred to the people of Manipur under Section 3 of the Manipur Constitution Act 1947, conveyed a press release issued by MSC Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence Narengbam Samarjit.
Yambem Biren further claimed that Manipur was the first country in Asia to introduce constitution based Government after the end of World War II.
Administration and governance of Manipur were transformed from the absolute monarchy system to the constitutional monarchy system after the enactment of the Manipur State Constitution Act 1947 and thus democracy was introduced in the independent and sovereign State of Manipur.
The Manipur State Constitution Act 1947 is still a living document.
It has not been repealed or suspended by the State or any sovereign authority until today.
The people of Manipur have inherent and constitutional right to hold State election under the Manipur State Constitution, Yambem Biren added.
