Imphal, September 28 2018:
Concerned parents of a young girl have claimed that their daughter has started developing psychiatric problems after she was reportedly beaten by the Principal of her school for drawing during class.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, the parents of the girl child alleged that on September 1, the authority of Free Progress School, Konthoujam (where their daughter studied) called them while they were working in their fields informing them that their daughter was feeling unwell.
When they went to the school, they found their daughter surrounded by the school staff and the parents noticed that their daughter seemed oblivious to their (parents) presence as well.
However, none of the school staff informed about any case of beating or corporal punishment of the child, the parents added.
The girl was immediately rushed to Khumbong PHC.
However, the doctor also failed to diagnose the condition of the little girl as she did not have any history of health problems.
The parents conveyed that they finally brought their daughter back home with IV drip and after the doctor prescribed some sleeping pills.
But they started seeing some changes in the little girl like avoiding food and refusing to talk.
The parents continued that the incident began unravelling after getting information from the parents of one of their daughter's friends.
They stated that, as per the information, on September 1 their daughter was drawing something during a free period and as she wanted to finish her drawing, she continued to do so even when the next period began.
However, the teacher caught her and she was made to stand up for the entirety of the class period.
After the period was over, the teacher took the girl to the Principal's room and explained the matter to the school Principal.
The parents alleged that after hearing the teacher's words, the Principal, without questioning or saying anything to the student, began beating her.
They further claimed that as per the reports they received, the Principal came into their daughter's classroom the next period and again beat her for not opening her chapters correctly due to which the student fainted.
The parents alleged that they have neither received any complaints or news in the past regarding their daughter either from the school side or from the Principal's side and added that if their daughter had indeed wronged greatly, it is natural to inform them first.
They further claimed that their daughter has started developing psychiatric problems following the incident and added that on September 3, their daughter began having some health related problems again and as such she was rushed to Raj Medicity but the doctors advised them to consult a psychiatrist.
The parents continued that they took their child to RIMS on September 5 and ever since then they have been taking her to RIMS for counselling and medication but her condition has failed to improve till date.
Appealing to the authorities concerned to take necessary actions against the involved Principal, the parents informed that on September 16, the Principal visited them and apologised about the incident but when they (parents) told the Principal that he has to take responsibility for the child's condition, he excused himself saying that he will discuss the situation with the school authorities.
However, since then, neither the Principal nor the school authority has attempted to contact us, the parents added.
