Mini dam in Sekmai, Wangjing inspected

Minor Irrigation and Information & Public Relations Parliamentary Secretary, Keisham Meghachandra inspected the Mini dam construction sites at Awang Sekmai, Imphal West and Wangjing, Thoubal district today.
The inspection drive, K Meghachandra said, was organised following information provided by the local MLA and the surrounding public concerning the condition of the dam.
On inspection, the secretary came across cracks and crumbled portions on both the mini dams.
The contractors, Meghachandra added, according to DPR has been notified to repair the defective areas from their own pockets at the earliest.
Contractors failing to amend the defects, he added, would be blacklisted and their project funds would also be seized.
Chief Engineer, Minor Irrigation L Gourakishore and staff also accompanied the inspection drive.
The mini dam construction work upon Sekmai river was taken up under the Minor Irrigation Department contract funded by North Eastern Council.
An estimated Rs 4.98 crore was funded by the NE Council for the project which began in 2011 .
The downstream portion of Sekmai mini dam and its retaining wall built on the eastern part of the dam was found severely damaged.
The whole of the retaining wall, Meghachandra said was literally in a shabby state.
Meanwhile, Wangjing Tentha A/C's MLA P Brojen also joined the inspection drive of the mini dam over Wangjing river built under funding from the Non-Laps-able Central Pool of Resources with a budget of Rs 4.42 crore.
Certain parts of Wangjing canal were also found caved in.
Both the Mini dams, Meghachandra added were constructed for irrigation purposes.
