Imphal, May 16 2012:
The Ethno Heritage Council (HERICOUN) today observed its 10th Foundation Day at Imphal Hotel with Sarangthem Manaobi (IPS), Commanding Officer of 7th Manipur Rifles as Chief Guest.
President of HERICOUN Mutum CHuramani Meetei presided over the function and Deputy Director, Manipur State Archives K Sushila attended as Guest of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Sarangthem Manaobi, CO 7 MR asserted that most Meeteis are sitting idle instead of conserving and developing their culture, tradition, ideology, sociology, religion, scripts and language and it will lead to the extinction of the race in the very near future if the situation remains the same.
By that time, Meeteis will only be seen in the museums, he added.
He said that many Meeteis do not know much about their land, tradition, culture and religion while they are all aware and have pretty knowledge of others' lands, traditions, cultures and religions.

Citing an example, he further said that most Meeteis will answer questions regarding rivers of other places when they could not mention anything about even five rivers of Manipur.
People of the state should give up the habit of ignoring the history of the state while studying history of others, he added.
He further said that the advent of Hinduism, which was introduced by Santidash Goshai, the colonialisation by the British after getting defeat in the Khongjom battle and the signing of merger agreement are the worst turning points in the history of Manipur.
Since Manipur became a part of the Indian Union after the forced merger, the economy of the Manipuri society became worsening.
People of the state should be aware of the present situation of the society which has become like the chickens in a coop who fight with each other for some grains provided by the owner, he added.
Renown singer and musicologist Laishram Birendrakumar was honoured with Tomthin Award as part of the function.
The Final round of the 3rd edition of Khangminnashi Iramdam Quiz-2012 was also held today in which, Johnston Higher Secondary School emerged first.
CC Higher Secondary School and Martin Grammar English School won the second and third positions respectively.
