Rainfall deficit hit farmers of Phoijing hard

Tekcham Ibochou, Advisor Loumee Sinmee Apunba Lup Thangtek Tera Makhong, while speaking to media persons in a press meet held at Phoijing Chingning Nodia Thongkhong Pucca Dam today, raised concerned about the fate of the standing paddy crops grown in an area spanning over 2,500 acre (1,000 pari) in Phoijing Thangtek Tera Makhon under Konthoujam Kendra that it will wither away if the present dry spell continues for just another 2-3 days.
Farmers are worried about the present situation of monsoon which appears to elude the State, he added and said that the crops need water to survive.
He continued that, in the past, enough water for cultivation was sourced through Phoijing mayai loukhong which connects with Mera Khong flowing along Tiddim road that also passed through Bamdiyar and Khabam, but their problem started after the earthened barricade were mounted at the meeting point of Phoijing mayai loukhong and Mera khong situated between Bamdiyar and Khabam, as no water was diverted to Phoijing mayai loukhong which is the main source of water for the farmers of Phoijing Thangtek Tera Makhon for cultivation.
Right now, Mera khong is filled with abundant water and is providing enough water for cultivation in the paddy fields of Malom and Meitram, he informed.
He also pointed out that their misfortune will be lessen if Phoijing Chingning Nodia Thongkhong Dam is repaired which was destroyed in flood.
However, farmers of the area in consultation with various Club is trying to repair the said dam temporarily to get the water, he maintained and drew the attention of the concerned authority for any kind of assistance to expedite the repairing work so that standing crops survive the present dry spell.
