Imphal, July 03 2016:
Social Welfare Department in association with
the Alliance for Injecting Drug use Programme, on Sunday, picked
up large number of used insulin syringes disposed by drug users
from roadsides along Kangla gate, Kangla moat, North AOC and
Minuthong stretch of the road.
The volunteers used gloves and
tongs to collect the used needles/syringes from the roadsides.
The Alliance for Injecting Drug use Programme (MACS,
DESAM, MSF, AMADA, CADA, Dalit Sena and TI Part-
ners) was constituted on June 29 this year.
Manipur State Aids Control Society (MACS), Imphal Joint
Director (TI) Abhiram Mongjam said the 'cleanliness drive'
aims to check the rising number of Injecting Drug Users
(IDU) in the State.
"We collected surprisingly large number of used syringes
on the first day of the drive", he said adding that the drive
would also serve as an awareness to drug users against using
and disposing of used needles on roadsides.
Alliance for Injecting Drug use Programme convenor N
Bobo said, "used syringes lying all over the road is not a good
sight.
One can even get infected with Hepatitis if one acciden-
tally steps on one of the used needles".
After the clean drive, the alliance will organise a campaign
to stop drug users from taking drugs openly on roadsides, he
added.
