Imphal gets more than 5000 litres of local liquor a day: K Joykumar

Assistant Commissioner of Excise Department Keisham Joykumar today told reporters that more than 5000 litres of local liquor from Sekmai, Phayeng and Andro reached Imphal and get distributed at different places.
He was talking on the sideline of burning 1200 litres of local liquor and nine litres of foreign liquors as part of a drive in view of the 10 Assembly Election.
He further said that 2500 to 5000 litres of local liquor are transported from Sekmai to Imphal daily.
At least 1500 to 2000 litres of Phayeng liquor are also transported to Imphal daily and the quantity is same for Andro liquor too.
Transportation mode of the liquors has changed significantly over the years.
Today, there are stockists in Imphal who get the liquors from traffickers who in turn acquire the liquors from Sekmai, Phayeng and Andro.
There are also people who distribute the liquors to different places in and around Imphal, he said.
The ill effects of the liquor was minimum when people get them directly from the original source.
But today the effect has become more hazardous since it comes through many persons who in turn mixed harmful substances to get more profits, he said while urging the drinkers to think over it.
In order to save the society and the youths from the ill effects of the liquor and the additives, Excise department has to intensify its drive, he said.
The department has so far seized and destroyed 13,495 litres of local liquor and 3541 litres of foriegn liquor from the day the election code of conduct came into effect, he said.
It may be mentioned that Commissioner of Excise, Sumant in an order had announced that January 26 to January 28 will remain as dry day in the whole state.
Moreover March 6 will also remain dry day.
Offenders will be punished as per the Assam Excise Act 1910 and Manipur Excise Act 1962, the order added.
