Imphal, June 24 2011:
Church leaders have a role to ensure smooth conduct of Assembly elections in the hill areas of the state, said president Rev Prim Vaiphei of the All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO) today.
He was speaking at the opening function of the "Consultation for Church Leaders on Contemporary Issues on Forthcoming General Election" held at Narilkhul community hall in Chandel district organized by AMCO.
Prim Vaiphei pointed out to the unfair practices in the Assembly elections in the past and stressed on the need for a smooth and fearless election with transparency in the hill areas.
Everybody needs to understand what elections are all about.
Church leaders should take a major role to make aware the people about elections, he said.
Unfair practice in election is against Christianity.
No obligation should be given when one casts a vote to a candidate of his or her choice.
A person who was elected in a fair election will serve the people with a true spirit, he asserted.
The consultation meeting was being organized with the objective of ensuring a free and fair election in the state as it will be the first step to bring truth in the global context.
He also appealed to the people to avoid cash for votes.
The consultation meeting which was held in two sessions was participated by church leaders and chiefs of various villages from different parts of the state.
The second session of the meeting was moderated by Rev Modungkhu, executive secretary of the Maring Naga Baptist Association.
Church leaders and village chiefs also shared their opinions in the meeting.
