Imphal, May 24 2014 :
The final charge hearing of a case filed against anti-AFSPA crusader Irom Chanu Sharmila by Manipur Police under section 309 of IPC (attempt to commit suicide) was held at the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Imphal East here today.
However, the verdict of the case would be announced on June 4 next month.
During the final charge hearing of the case, the jail authorities submitted Sharmila's mental and physical fitness report to the Court as ordered in the previous hearing.
The report mentioned Sharmila to be in a state of sound mental and physical condition.
The SP (Prisons), who was earlier asked to appear before the Court today, failed to turn up at the Court at the time of submission of the fitness report.
But later, at the insistence of the CJM, the SP turned up about half an hour after Sharmila was produced before the Court.
Talking to media persons after the hearing, Sharmila's counsel Khaidem Mani said that the charge-sheet filed by the police under section 309 of IPC has become somewhat irrelevant to Sharmila as the fitness report clearly mentioned her to be in sound mental and physical condition.
Only a person with depression or mental problem can think of committing suicide, but not a lady like Sharmila who is just adopting hunger strike as a means to press her demand for repeal of AFSPA.
Mani also said that Sharmila would be produced before Patiala House Court in New Delhi on May 27 in connection with another case against her filed by Delhi Police under section 309 of IPC.
