Health and Family Welfare Minister L Jayantakumar Singh has said that the Palliative Care programme is gaining momentum in the State.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the 3rd PALLICON, 2019, an International Conference, held at the auditorium of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), as chief guest, Health Minister Jayantakumar maintained that physical and psychological care of the elderly persons and terminally ill patients is a priority.
Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.
He also said that many elderly persons belonging to well to do families are staying at old age homes due to lack of proper care and attention to their wellbeing by their families.
Elderly persons should be given proper care and affection they need, he added.
The Minister also appealed the agitating nurses of JNIMS to go back to their normal service and reminded them of their noble duties as nurses.
He assured that their demands will be discussed with the Chief Minister and officials concerned.
The inaugural function was also attended by V Vumlunmang, Principal Secy Health & FW, Dr K Rajo Singh, Director Health Services, Dr Suresh Kumar, World Health Organisation, Collaborating Centre for Community Participation in Palliative Care and Long Term Care, Prof Th Bhimo Singh, Director JNIMS, Dr Ksh Manglem, retd CMO and Senior Medicolegal Specialist.
