ZSUM fumes over rising police check-posts, 'taxes'

The Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur (ZSUM) said it has been deeply disturbed by the rising number of police checkpoints for collection of legal/illegal taxes between Jirighat and Imphal.
The vehicles plying on National Highway-37 have been facing these taxation by State agencies, not to mention UG groups which have been indulging in extortion.
The police/excise checkpoints have become a serious headache to transporters as well as the general public since the past few years.
According to ZSUM, many poor people are victims of this excessive police taxation.
The Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur also expressed its suspicion that the personnel manning the check posts/excise points have been collecting 'taxes' on their own without any knowledge or consent of the higher authority.
ZSUM said that the higher authority should instruct/direct the various police stations/checkpoints and other such stations which have been collecting taxes from vehicles to desist from such practices immediately.
According to the ZSUM, there are such eighteen stations/checkpoints between Jirighat and Imphal and they have been collecting Rs 12,600 per vehicle on the aggregate.
Taxes collected at the check points are Rs 1500 at Jirighat Foreign Gate, Rs 500 at CID Jiribam, Rs 1500 at Jiribam PS, Rs 1000 at commando post, Rs 500 at excise Gularthol, Rs 1900 at Leingangpokpi, Rs 200 at IRB gate Kaiphundai, Rs 200 at Makru bridge, Rs 800 at Nungba PS, Rs 300 at Irang excise, Rs 800 at Noney PS, Rs 500 at Noney excise, Rs 500 at Senapati PS, Kotlen, Rs 500 at New Keithelmanbi, Rs 500 at New Keithelmanbi excise, Rs 500 at Patsoi PS, Rs 500 at Patsoi excise and Rs 400 at Commando gate.
