Imphal, February 07, 2012:
Challenging MPCC President and INC candidate of Nungba A/C in the recent election to the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly over his denial of alleged malpractices during re-poll in Tupul polling station, Working President of Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) Kh Devabrata has mooted that Election Commission of India (ECI) should be allowed to institute a commission of inquiry to know the truth.
Addressing a press conference at the office of the party located at Palace Compound here this afternoon, Devabrata questioned why Gaikhangam did not lodge a complaint with the ECI before the election if at all he had known about armed group ZUF supporting MSCP candidate and unleashing violence, and said that such concocted charges against MSCP deserved strong condemnation.
Contrary to the claim of Gaikhangam, it was at his behest that the Inner Agent of MSCP candidate was threatened by the police and the Assam Rifles who descended at Tupul polling station, Devabrata asserted, adding that ECI should take serious note of the incident which took place while the election code of conduct is still in force.
Devabrata said that ECI has admitted all the complaints lodged from the side of MSCP and the results are likely to be known by February 10. The stand of MSCP is that the second EVM used during the re-poll at Tupul polling station should not be included in the counting, he added.
One MSCP worker, who claimed to have witnessed the unfair means used by Congress workers during the re-poll and was present during the press conference, recounted that voting in the second EVM had been done in the presence of only Congress agent inside the polling station.
Following the threat and intimidation by a combined team of police and Assam Rifles, who came to the house of the Inner Agent of MSCP on the day of re-polling, all the family members, particularly women and children, have not been living in perpetual dread since then.
