Ukhrul, June 22 2016:
Forest Department, Ukhrul, under the aegis of the Eastern Forest Division took out on a drive to check illegal marketing of forest products and wild animals at Ukhrul town yesterday.
Forest Beat Officer Honyo Kaping who led the drive said the drive was conducted following reports of illegal trading of forest product at Ukhrul town and also to increase public awareness on forest and wild life preservation.
According to the Department, routine checking will be conducted at Ukhrul town and Forest Beat Officers will be installed at different junctions of the district to check illegal transportation of timber and other forest products.
Many wild animals at the district are on the brink of extinction because of continuous poaching, H Kaping added.
He appealed to the people of the district, especially local traders, to ensure strict adherence to the rules and regulations laid down under the Forest Act.
He also sought the co-operation of the people for effective implementation of wild life preservation in the district.
