Imphal, June 22 2016:
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also called benign enlargement of the prostate (BEP or BPE), is a noncancerous increase in size of the prostate which affects the aged causing difficulty in urination among men has become a reason to worry according to Consultant Urologist, Laparoscopic and Renal Transplant Surgeon, Dr Somorendro Paonam.
In an interaction with The Sangai Express today at Shija Hospitals and Research Insititue, Health City, Langol the urologist claims that in the span of five months starting from Feb 2016 till today out of 323 male patients who visited the OPD, 91 patients were diagnosed with BPH and it is a good reason to worry for the aged.
Such high number indicates that there could be other patients who go undiagnosed.
He states that the enlargement of the prostate gland in men starts from the 50s and very common after 60 years of age which results in BPH.
Among the symptoms of BPH includes poor flow of urine, waking at night to urinate, urgency, involuntary urination, including involuntary urination at night, or urge incontinence.
Voiding symptoms include urinary hesitancy, intermittency (not continuous), involuntary interruption of voiding, weak urinary stream, straining to void, a sensation of incomplete emptying, and terminal dribbling (uncontrollable leaking after the end of urination, also called post-micturition dribbling) .
Citing on the preventive measures of BPH, urologist Dr Somorendro states that unfortunately there is no specific preventive measures.
Early detection and diagnosis and proper treatment is the key to prevention of such complications, he added.
He maintained that there are certain tests to ascertain a man suffering from BPH.
Determining any history of urinary tract infection, physical examination, digital rectal examination, prostate and post void residual, ultrasound examination of the testicles, prostate, and kidneys is often performed, again to rule out malignancy and hydronephrosis.
Other differential diagnosis includes other diseases of the bladder, urethra, and prostate such as bladder cancer, urinary tract infection, urethral stricture, urethral calculi (stones), chronic prostatitis and prostate cancer, he added.
Addressing on the treatment he states that it branches into two ways- medical therapy and surgical therapy.
For surgical therapy-open surgery and endoscopic surgery can be opted, he added.
If not treated in time and negligence can lead to severe bothersome symptoms which includes poor self esteem, sleep deprivation, recurrent infection of urinary tract leading to prostate cancer, bladder stone and kidney failure.
"Timely consultation to a urologist is the key to prevent complications," said Dr Somorendro.
