Women vendors of Ukhrul town today staged a sit in protest against the dismantling of their makeshift stalls constructed at the roadside of Ukhrul town at three different locations, reports our Ukhrul correspondent.
The president of Ukhrul Town Women Vendors Association (Zaoranaosin Shim) MY Onmila stated that on March 16, the volunteers of AHTA dismantled the stalls constructed at the by pass lane near Viewland Church, stalls on the footpaths of town hall and ZEO office, Phungreitang without any alternative arrangement to continue their daily business activities, till the construction of women market complex is completed for permanent allotment.
Zaoranaosin Shim vendors were evicted for the construction of women market complex in 2017.Onmila further mentioned that with the verbal assurance from former chairman of Ukhrul ADC Dr Yaronsho Ngalung, they were permitted to occupy the roadside stalls to run their daily business activities.
On the other hand, an official order from Ukhrul Autonomous District Council (UACC) office issued by Addl CEO on March 15 asked the women vendors to vacate the said areas (by pass road Viewland, foot path at Phungreitang) within three days.
However the women vendors refused to move.
The Women Vendors Association of Ukhrul town submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Manipur via Deputy Commissioner, Ukhrul to look into their plight at the earliest and demanded immediate arrangement to run their business till the completion of the women market complex.
Around two hundred women vendors participated in the sit in protest at Gandhi Chowk, Phungreitang, Ukhrul.
