World Hypertension Day observed

Imphal, May 17 2016: World Hypertension Day was observed today at the auditorium of Shija Hospitals.

The programme was organized by Lions Club of Imphal Leimarol in association with Department of Medicine, Shija Hospitals, Langol.

Speaking at the occasion, Lion Ksh Madhabi, president, Lions Club Imphal Leimarol and Lion M Swaroopini, Regional Head of Region 11 expressed their gratitude to Shija Hospitals for inviting Lions Club Imphal to jointly organize the awareness program.

Professor Dr M Kulachandra Singh, HOD, Department of Medicine, Unit � II, Shija Hospitals, who was the resource person of the awareness programme spoke on hypertension, its prevalence rate, causes, complications, treatment modalities and prevention.

Reducing salt intake, stopping tobacco use, reducing stress by slowing down, yoga or meditation and increasing physical activity are some of the key strategies to reduce blood pressure also known as hypertension, he said.

When asked of genetic factor which could link to hypertension, he said some study claims that 10 to 15 percent of high blood pressure is hereditary.

In his speech, Dr Kh Palin, chairman cum Managing Director, Shija Hospitals said that nearly three lakh people in Manipur are affected by high blood pressure.

He further stressed on the importance of stress management to prevent hypertension.

The awareness programme was attended by eminent members of Lions Club Imphal Leimarol, doctors and staff of Shija Hospitals.

Similar programme was also organised by Manipur Heart Care Society at JNIMS auditorium.

Director of JNIMS Prof L Deben, MS of JNIMS Prof L Ranbir, adviser of MHCS Prof Y Iboton, former HoD, Paediatric Dept of JNIMS Dr Kh Chourjit, Dean of JNIMS W Gyaneshwar attended the programme as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.

The chief guest doled out some amount from his pocket to MHCS for purchase of ten BP measuring machines.

Semi-automated BP machines were also distributed to over 10 community leaders on the occasion.

A special workshop on detection of high BP using semi-automated BP machine was also held.
