Imphal, August 13 2019: Congress Working Committee (CWC) Member as well as president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Gaikhangam has claimed that even though India gained independence a long time back, the people living the country seem to be losing their independence day by day.

He made the statement during the observation of the 128th Patriot's Day which was organised by MPCC at Manipur Bhawan today.

As a part of the event, CLP leader and former CM Okram Ibobi and MPCC president Gaikhangam led many in paying floral tributes to the portraits of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General.

Speaking to media persons later, Gaikhangam said that the day is observed in honour of the brave freedom fighters who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and safeguard Manipur.

He then claimed that today even though the country gained independence a long time ago, the people seem to be losing their independence bit by bit everyday.

Gaikhangam said that freedom does not mean just political freedom and asked if the citizens of India feel truly free and independent today.

It is necessary for the people of Manipur to uphold the true meaning of freedom.

It is also necessary for the Government authorities to make sure there is true freedom, Gaikhangam said.

On the other hand, replying to a query about Ningthoujam Babysana's case, the MPCC president replied that the Congress party is vehemently opposed to any form of crime against women and children.

As investigation is still ongoing into the case, Gaikhangam said that he would not like to make any comment in this regard, but added that it is necessary for justice to be delivered.

Those found guilty, should be properly punished according to the laws of the land, he added.

Speaking about Jammu and Kashmir, Gaikhangam condemned the BJP's act of dividing the region allegedly based on communal and regional lines and added that this incident has created apprehension and fear in regions like the North East and Manipur in particular.

With Jammu and Kashmir, the Centre has shown that the minority voice does not matter, he said adding that if such a bold step was taken in case of Jammu and Kashmir without any regard, the condition will be much worse for a small State like Manipur if a similar situation arises.

Speaking about some political parties of Manipur welcoming the Central Government's decision regarding Jammu and Kashmir, Gaikhangam asked what their (political parties) reasoning and excuse will be if the same happens to Manipur.
