Manipur Nupi Marup bats for efficient women representatives

Imphal, January 30 2017: Amid the increasing crimes against women and children, it has become crucial to elect women representatives who can uplift and empower women through various initiatives.

This was stated by All Manipur Nupi Marup president Thingujam Ningol Maisnam Ongbi Sakhi during an interaction with The Sangai Express.

Sakhi said that though there are three women representatives in the State Assembly, it can be undoubtedly said that no concrete measures have been taken up to solve issues affecting women and children and this is unfortunate.

She urged all the women organisations not to seek for any kind of donation from election candidates and instead exercise the voting right to elect sincere representatives.

"Some girls, without a fair knowledge of what Thabal Chongba really is, have been blindly organising the same for no valid reason.

Such activity that is deeply-rooted in our culture and history should be followed accordingly," she said and added, "When election fever is starting to grip the State, it is necessary for all to understand what do we expect from our representatives and elect those who can help in building a society we envision" .

Cases of crimes against women and children are increasing day by day.

A woman can only feel the pain of another woman and the horror of victimised child.

As such, electing a women representatives who can sincerely work is a must, she said.

She added, "The first Nupi Lan and second Nupi Lan are the most important movements in the history of Manipuri women.

At present society, it has been said that women are equally treated in the State.

However, it is a well known fact that women of the State cannot participate in the decision-making processes" . She further informed that All Manipur Nupi Marup also took a crucial role in requesting the authority concern to pass the women reservation Bill.

On September 12, 1996, All Manipur Nupi Marup wrote to Geeta Mukherjee, who was at that time the chairperson of the Joint Select Committee on one- third reservation of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and Assemblies.

The representatives of Nupi Marup also met her personally regarding the women reservation matter.

The Bill is yet to be passed in Lok Sabha which is saddening.

Women should unite and work.

Instead of pointing fingers at one another, women representatives should come together to work to solve the grievous issues that have plagued the State, Sakhi said.
