Imphal, January 25 2016:
The 6th National Voters' Day was observed here at GM Hall today under the aegis of the Election Commission of India.
Speaking as chief guest at the gathering, Chief Secretary O Nabakishore said that media in Manipur have been working in a very fair manner without showing any form of partiality or discrimination.
He then appealed to all the citizens of Manipur to exercise their right to adult franchise conscientiously in the next Legislative Assembly election which is due in 2017 to elect the most worthy representatives.
He remarked that the poll percentage of over 80 recorded in the recent Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat election was a healthy sign.
Guiding the youngsters to the right path and enabling them to choose the most worthy representatives would go a long way in bringing speedy development to the State.
Young voters should not waste their right to vote at the influence of other people and they must vote for the candidates of their choice, Nabakishore asserted.
All men and women are equal in a democratic country and this must be kept in mind by all citizens, he added.
State Election Commissioner R Rameshchandra who attended the function as guest of honour appealed to all the citizens of the State not to misuse their right to vote under any circumstances.
By exercising their right to adult franchise, citizens should elect representatives who are dedicated to public welfare and can bring speedy development, Rameshchandra said.
Electors' Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) were also distributed to some young voters at the end of the function before prizes were distributed to winners of essay, quiz and slogan/message competitions held earlier in connection with the National Voters' Day.
