Irom Chanu Sharmila figuring among 1000 women nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005 has been authenticated by North East Network (NEN) administrator Esther Chinnu today.
The 33 year old, Sharmila, from Kongpal Kongkham Leikai who is currently on hunger strike at JN Hospital demanding lifting of repressive laws is among the 157 women nominated for the prize from Asian countries which include 91 from India including six from the North East region, detailed the NEN administrator while speaking to newspersons today.
Stating that nominees for the UN prize from the region is prepared by the NEN the lady administrator informed of the nomination comprising of one from Nagaland, two from Assam and one from Sikkim.
She also contended that candidature for the prize is in recognition of commendable service of women rights activists in their relentless struggle for peace and justice.
