Women slam plan to arrest SHDDC leaders
Times of India | TNN | Imphal Sep 17, 2011, 11.20AM IST:
The Sadar Hills Women Union (SHWU) strongly opposed the state cabinet's decision to arrest leaders of the agitating Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) for openly asking people of the area to arm themselves.
In pursuit of its decades-old demand, the SHDDC has been imposing an indefinite economic blockade on National Highways 39 and 53 since August 1. "The government's decision is immature and lacks wisdom as the intention is to suppress the people, who are asking for their legitimate right/demand - district-hood of Sadar Hills," a statement of the union released on Friday said.
"SHWU won't tolerate any attempt to arrest any of our leaders. In the event of the government going ahead with this decision, all the women of Sadar Hills will rise for a more violent and destructive agitation and the government shall be held responsible for any unsavoury outcome resulting out of such agitation," warned the statement. The union further asked individuals or groups to desist from filing cases against SHDDC leaders and supporters.
