Where Fate Leads
Dorsy Hodam *
Leaning against the archway of the door
Staring blankly across the horizon
The past muddled with the future
Unable to tell dreams from reality.
The cracked hands on top of each other
Pinned to the ground; passing before her eyes
All that has happened, all that is to come
Powerless to move forward or backward
Even though they had nothing before
They at least had each other
The future was hazy but hopes, never blurry
Now, all alone, she is left behind
The small house never felt so big
He just so easily went with his father
Whose last rites was just seven days before.
Without any warning, without any goodbye.
Stiff as a pole, still as the mountain
As the whirlpool within teases her.
Her eyes unmoved, stuck in the inevitable.
Why was she ever born at all ?
What from here, where from now ?
Why, a punishment so harsh
For a crime that is unknown.
The stiff strands of her lashes
From the tears that have dried
Flickered like leaves on a stormy night
Breaking her away from the trance
As the cries of her one year old
Slid through the silence from inside.
