Twin murder rumour keeps truckers away from NH-53
Times of India | Sep 10, 2011, 11.02PM IST
Barely 12 hours after nine trucks carrying essential commodities to the Imphal valley choked by highway blockades were set ablaze, a rumor of the murder of two drivers on National Highway-53 forced over 1,500 truckers to cancel their trip to Manipur on Saturday along the route.
On Friday night, Kuki agitators, seeking creation of Sadar Hills as a full-fledged district, had burnt down nine trucks at Kuki-dominated Keithelmanbi on National Highway 39. "This morning, there was a rumour that two truck drivers were killed along the highway. Following this, the truckers who were supposed to leave Imphal on NH-53 under heavy security arrangements on Saturday called off their trip," a local said.
In the meantime, the Transporters' and Drivers' Council (TDC), while clarifying that no violent incident took place on NH-53, urged all to maintain peace. It also appealed to all not to damage goods trucks and target the drivers, who are ferrying commodities for the people with all risks and responsibilities along the highway.
