Trained to survive, young owls fly free in Manipur forest
Times of India | K Sarojkumar Sharma | TNN | Feb 5, 2013, 06.07 AM IST
People for Animals (PFA) Thoubal on Monday evening freed 17 young owls at a foothill forest in Thoubal district after imparting strenuous survival training to them at an artificial mini forest. The nocturnal birds, who are about two to three months old, belong to two rare species - Eastern Grass Owl and Barn Owl - and of them five were rescued by a school boy Moirangthem Priyobarta Meitie from the hands of poachers in the district.
"To ensure these birds do not become too familiar with human beings, we did not stay close to them during their three-month stay at our complex. This was done to prevent them from being easily caught by poachers or being killed once they are rehabilitated in the wild," Bishwajit said.
