The Sparrow by the Window
K. Radhakumar *
Hi, Pop!
You have not yet greeted the morning,
The little sparrow by the French window
My cute little sparrow has done it.
Come on!
Have a look-see.
Your poets are liars
They say a sparrow sings
When it chirps,
And a sparrow dances among the leaves
When it jumps;
A sparrow just lives its life
For nature cannot lie.
My little son
Ah, he can always tell the difference
Between one morning and another;
Every day is a lovely day.
He spends evenings glued to the TV
Watching the animals and birds of South Africa.
They get on fine.
What a lovely surprise!
I should have known.
The lovely mess of the night is gone;
It is a lovely day.
Last night
I dreamt about a lot of images and sounds,
Out of the chaos came a beautiful snake;
My whole being echoed.
In the middle of telling the dream to my wife
She intervenes and rounds it off as follows:
'What a Freudian slip!
You have not enjoyed yourself
So much for a long time;
You have been philosophizing
About things outside your experience.
Wake up!
You have outlived your true self.'
